flexibility -
Important information about work-life fit/flexibility - One issue for many job seekers is landing an opportunity offering flexibility, balance, or, what consultant,à Cali Williams Yost, CEO and Founder of Flex Strategy Group and author of Work+Life: Finding the Fit Thats Right for You, would call work-life fit. Today, Im happy to share research Cali sent me from from the 2011 Work+Life Fit Reality Check Survey. It illustrates that, Work life flexibility is no longer a bright, shiny, novelty item that only a few people have.à In fact, most full-time employees have some form of work life flexibility and they are much less afraid to use it than they were five years ago. The following tips are directly from survey findings to help you get the most out of the work life flexibility thats become a foundational part of the way we live and work: Tip 1: Dont let too much work and too little time keep you from work life flexibility, instead use that flexibility strategically to get your work done and have a life. When asked, respondents ranked increased workload or no time for flexibility as the top obstacle (29%) that kept them from using or improving their work life flexibility.à Looked at another way, flexibility could also be the key to managing that greater workload and having more time for the other parts of your life.à A periodic shift in hours, or working from home now and then could restore a sense of productivity and well-being.à Be creative. Tip 2: Remember that work life flexibility comes in many forms.à It includes both day-to-day, informal ad hoc shifts in how, when and where you work, as well as formal plans that officially change your work+life fit. Even though 62% of respondents said they had some type of day-to-day, ad hoc flexibility, its easy to take it for granted as a given.à Use it thoughtfully and strategically to manage the way work fits into your life every day. If you are interested in more formal plan, learn ahead of time how to present a proposal thats a win for you and the business. Tip 3:à To make informal, day-to-day flexibility a success for you, your team and the business, make sure to communicate and coordinate with all of the key stakeholders, not just your supervisor. According to the survey, when respondents made occasional changes in how, when and where they work, they discussed those changes with: 79% their supervisor 63% their spouse, family or partner 52% their colleagues 45% those they supervise, and 7% no one. You dont need to tell your colleagues and those you supervise why you are using flexibility, but let them know how the work will get done and how they can reach you if needed. Tip 4: Challenge any lingering fears that may be keeping you from using or improving your work life flexibility. Make sure any fear or concern is based on fact, not invalid assumptions.à The good news is that individuals are much less likely to let fear or negative perceptions keep them from using or improving their flexibility than they were in 2006: You might make less money:à 21% in 2011 versus 45% in 2006 You might lose your job:à 16% in 2011 versus 28% in 2006 Others will think you dont work hard:à 11% in 2011 versus 39% in 2006 You worry that your boss wouldà say no:à 13% in 2011 versus 32% in 2006 However, obviously some fears and concerns linger.à Learn about the compensation policy related to flexibility where you arent working less, just differently.à à Understand the employment climate in your organization.à Make sure you continue to work hard, communicate and coordinate well (see Tip 3) and learn how to present a flexibility plan thats a win-win and hard to turn down. Tip 5: Understand that work life flexibility is more than a perk, or benefit.à Its a strategy that your employer can use to retain talent, manage workload and grow.à And without it, the business will suffer particularly in the areas of health/wellness, morale and productivity.à One of the surprising findings for the 2011 Work+Life Fit Reality Check is how many respondents either think work life flexibility is a perk or benefit (36%) or dont know what it is (14%).à Just as work life flexibility can help you strategically manage your workload and resources, it can also benefit the business in other areas.à Specifically, a majority of respondents (66%) felt that without work life flexibility health (48%), morale (41%) and productivity (36%) would suffer. After 30 Years of Marriage, We Co-Wrote a Book On Gender Inequality Heres What Weve Learned
After 30 Years of Marriage, We Co-Wrote a Book On Gender Inequality Heres What Weve Learned Andrea Kramer and Alton Harris, more commonly known by their nicknames Andie and Al, are familiar with what it takes to build and maintain a successful partnership, both at work and at home.Theyve both held senior management positions within law firms, getting to know the ins and outs of what it takes to keep a well-oiled firm running, from the recruiting, hiring and firing to supervising teams and handling promotions. Theyve also been married for over 30 years. And during that time, theyve developed insight into how they can help advance workplace gender equality as a team.Thats partly what drove them to collaborate on their latest venture, the book . In it, the co-authors spell out a rebuttal to age-old stereotypes that position inter-female conflict as the result of internal forces, like jealousy and pettiness, looking instead to the institutional forces at play. Its a topic theyve had ple nty of opportunity to take notes on throughout their careers. And, given the number of times theyve collaborated with each other on legal issues, it only made sense to write the book as a pair, too.Andie and Al recently sat down with Fairygodboss to talk about their writing process and to share exactly how their decades-long marriage fortifies them as partners, professionally and personally. When did you first start working together?Andie We started working together when we were lawyers at the saatkorn firm, and we began writing a monthly column for a financial jurnal at that time, too. After we got married, I went to a larger firm, but we continued to collaborate. Writing together is something we enjoy doing together, and were good at it. We have separate careers, but together we have built a home, raised a daughter, shared resources and written a lot.Al One day, Andie came to me and said, I want to reach more women about overcoming gender bias, but to do that, I need to write a bo ok. Will you write it with me? She couldnt imagine taking on such an enormous writing project without me, and frankly, I couldnt imagine not doing it with her. So we started collaborating on gender issues. Now seven years later, we are still writing and speaking together to help women combat gender bias.In writing this book together, did you have any thoughts or concerns around how the process would impact your relationship?Andie When I asked Al to write a book with me, it never entered my mind that it could pose difficulties for our personal relationship. We had collaborated on legal issues for many years, and I saw no reason this project would be any more stressful for our personal relationship. And besides, I wanted to get Als (male) perspective to give women a balanced picture of what they were up against. Writing together welches what we did, and when we started lecturing and conducting workshops together, it became clear that we were both better together than we were on our ow n. As one friend recently remarked, Isnt Andie and Al, one word?AlI cant begin to count the number of times people have said to me something like, Marriage is for better or worse but never for lunch. I always smile at this but think how much they are missing. Andie and I work together in the same room we talk about our daughter, our professional engagements, our friends and our social plans, our writing and speaking. Everything blends into everything else in one seamless whole. Its not a matter of better or worse, for richer or poorer its about engaging in the whole process of living, thinking and doing together. How did you approach the actual writing of the book? Did you divvy certain parts up?Andie I am often asked if Al and I divide our writing up my doing X and Al doing Y. That has always struck me as peculiar. I know that spouses are often advised to have distinct areas of responsibility so as not to come into conflict. Maybe that makes sense for some people, but I cant imagin e formally dividing our writing responsibilities. Sometimes I do a first draft and Al edits it other times, its the reverse. Whichever way it starts, however, before we sign off on a finished piece, it has gone back and forth so many times that its hard to remember who started it, or who added, took out or modified what. How did you handle disagreements that came up during the process, if any did?AlPeople ask us whether we ever disagree, have serious conflicts, or feel hostile to or resentful of one another. Sure, we disagree. What we have to say wouldnt be nearly as insightful and powerful as it is if we didnt have different perspectives and challenge each others ideas. But disagreement is not conflict, and I can only think of one instance that came close to being a conflict that we resolved within hours.AndieI think that the dream relationship is pursuing a challenging, important task with someone you love and respect. So, I guess I am in a dream relationship. Sure, we have our dif ferences, because we have had different life and professional experiences. Indeed, the core of what we write about is how and why womens and mens experiences in the workplace are so different simply because of their different genders. But without those differences, there would be no point to our collaboration. Ultimately, we are able to meld our differences because our love for one another makes it safe to bring up and explore whatever thoughts, feelings and concerns we have. What do you think has helped you to take on this project and others so successfully as a couple?Al We each have successful, rewarding and highly satisfying professional careers, but the two fruchtwein fulfilling and meaningful experiences of our lives have been raising our daughter and writing and speaking together. And in some ways, those experiences are not all that different.Andie Neither has involved one of us being in charge or having ultimate control over this aspect or that aspect of the undertaking. We l isten to one another and to our daughter, and we almost never become dogmatic or defensive. We are always willing to change course if what we are doing is not working. Thankfully, both our daughter and our writing have turned out remarkably well. It is hard to imagine two luckier people--
